Times like Those Make Great Poems
I had a small majority of poems to choose from and I read them all and I found two that I understood and took to heart. They both were similar in the fact that they had something to do with war and they both didn’t flat out and explain their points. The first poem that caught my eye was Alicia Ostinker’s Daffodils because without me overanalyzing it I understood what the poet meant. I also liked Kevin Powers’ Letters composed during a lull in the fighting. His poem was short but it was just enough to make me agree and know what he was going through without him explaining.
Daffodils to me was a poem explaining how bad the war was and how precious the soldiers war. I thought that Ostinker was making a comparison between a flower and a human being. Not only soldiers I thought she was speaking of human kind too. To me it made me appreciate how beautiful people are no matter how different they are.
Powers’ poem seemed like it had nothing to say but it spoke a lot to me, for a moment I knew exactly what Powers was going through. To me, he seems like a man who is a relationship and he’s protecting it by telling nice lies. Those lies though are there to protect his lover from fear. He doesn’t want to tell his love how brutal the war really is because he knows it will only bring more heartache. I have caught myself several times in the same role as Powers and the lies aren’t there to hurt they are solely there to protect. I feel like the poet can relate to many people in a relationship because I feel like little white lies such as his are common. His poem was simple and petite but to me much more powerful than novel length poems.
I don’t have much in common with wars but like all people I do have an opinion and I do have remorse. These poets brought great inspiration to me and to seek out for the people who suffer from the war and their loved ones. I really enjoyed this assignment because it makes me think of what I normally avoid.

My Sam Hamill Response

I was caught off guard when I read about Sam Hamill. He has a very unique story about him, much different than what I was mentally preparing myself for. I was shocked to find out that a person like him would be a famous poet. The Necessity to Speak was enjoyable to read because the story was extreme and it really grasped my attention. It’s not often when I read stories about people like Sam Hamill. But I’m not hear to really talk about Sam himself, I’m here to discuss his point.
When Sam Hamill brought up stories about woman that have been abused and his jail experiences I was attached to his writing because he relates to his readers and their interests. In addition to saying that he made up a great point about writing poetry and I feel like it should apply to all writing. “The poet is grateful for the opportunity to serve”, (Hamill pg. 6). It made me stop and appreciate poets in general because I personally tend to feel used as a reader.
Hamill made points by adding experiences and heartfelt stories. He taught me that good poets don’t care and they step out of their shells and forget about reality to create their writings. I posted in a discussion how much I didn’t like poetry and after reading this I want to reread some old poems and learn with open arms because Sam Hamill makes a point I can’t compare to. He gets kudos for changing my mind on reading and writing because I was doubtful on my capabilities. Now I will take my emotions from past experiences which weren’t as brutal as Hamill’s but deep like his and contribute them in the way I write poems and literature.

Nobokov Reading

I enjoyed the readings and I did take a different look at the way I read because of this article. It told me to look at the broader picture and not be so judgemental on my readings. People need to look at the big picture and not be so subjective. Thinking in a wider agenda about reading and giving yourself that oppertunity to expand different types of reading is wonderful.

Having an open mind and not reading with a pessimistic and picky attitude is the best way to be a better reader. I feel as if all readers need to take this advance because if people are like me than they must be picky with genres of writing and how they read. An open opinion when it comes to reading makes the experience more enjoyable and it can also help someone learn and focus more.

I am a stubborn reader myself and with this article I will have to admit I was peesimistic at first but when I took the advice I feel as if I came out as a better reader all from this one article. I know that now I can look forward to any types of readings because I am going to read with open doors and with that in mind I feel more positive about my experience and performance.

Yes, I want to be a Medical Examiner . It's an outrageous job and is quite abnormal but I like the craziness. I'm still at the beginning of my career route but I think I have a better lead than other future medical examiners. I got my interest in forensics because of Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) . This club really opened my eyes and helped choose a right career for me. I started the program 2008 and placed 3rd in Arizona State and qualified for nationals. In 2009 I placed 3rd in Arizona State again and went to Nationals for my first time. I placed 3rd in the Nation. Forensic Medicine Competitions is what I have been good at for a couple years and I want to expand those competitions into a career. I had an amazing burst of energy at the Tennessee Nationals and the close win and big reward has given me a huge burst of confidence.
Becoming a Medical Examiner is a really tough job and it’s a long journey to get there. The first step to becoming a Medical Examiner is to complete a 4 year Bachelor Degree program. After the Bachelor Degree program they must complete Medical school and get a Medical Degree. After the Medical degree the journey still isn’t over, there is also a required internship for the field of forensics before someone can start their career.
Even though the path to becoming a Medical examiner is long and time consuming the job is well worth the eight plus years of college. The day to day duties a Medical Examiner does often is autopsies, interviews, and serving as witnesses in court. The purpose of the job is to declare cause of death. Cause of death is very important in crime cases because it can solve a case. There are many causes of death but another problem medical examiners have to solve is the manner of death. Manner and cause of death may seem very similar but aren’t. The causes of death are problems such as strangulation, heart attack, or thick abrasions. There aren’t as many manners of death as there is cause. The main four manners of death are natural, homicide, accidental, and suicide.
I have come across several controversies and the main one would be loss of job because of false interpretation. The wrong cause of death can ruin a medical examiners career because their observations are mostly for families and the law. Lawsuits are a major stressor on medical examiners and make the job a burden. Not a lot of people get interested in losing careers and it’s common for medical examiners.
Despite the probability of losing my career because of a mistake I’m still willing to try. As of right now, becoming a medical examiner is the only thing I have going for me. Maybe with a couple more years of prerequisites I will change my mind.
